PharmaEssentia Corporation, headquartered in Taiwan, has added Eric Vogel as Head of Commercialization for the United States.

Vogel’s appointment will help PharmaEssentia drive global commercial growth of Besremi (ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft) for additional approved uses.

Commercialization for New Indication

Besremi holds Orphan Drug Designation from the U.S. FDA for treatment of adults with polycythemia vera (PV). In summary, PV is a myeloproliferative disorder, associated with a Janus kinase-2 (JAK2) mutation, causing neoplastic proliferation of hematopoietic progenitor cells. In turn, this causes elevated red blood cell production, and secondary white blood cell and platelet production. Complications primarily revolve around increased blood viscosity, including thromboses.

PharmaEssentia is now seeking a label expansion for ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft to include essential thrombocythemia (ET). This is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by clonal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells. Compared to PV, ET results in sustained thrombocytosis with platelet counts often exceeding 450 × 10³/µL. Associated risks may include shortened lifespan. Currently, management strategies range from low-dose aspirin all the way to cytoreductive therapy.

PharmaEssentia Adding Proven Leader

To aid in this advancement, Vogel brings to PharmaEssentia more than 20 years’ experience in oncology and hematology. He most recently served as Group Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Incyte. Prior to that, he held a series of senior commercial leadership roles at AstraZeneca. This tenure included the successful product launch of AstraZeneca’s first orphan drug.

“Clinical results Besremi has demonstrated [are] truly impressive, and support what I believe is a highly differentiated opportunity,” Vogel said. “I look forward to working with the PharmaEssentia team to support the potential expansion of Besremi.”

Besremi’s FDA Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) target action date in ET is Aug. 30, 2026.
